Contaminated water can easily enter the ear canal during swimming, causing inflammation of the ear or otitis media. People with chronic middle ear infection, eardrum perforations and grommets are recommended to wear swimming earplugs during water contact to prevent ear infections. There are two types of swimming earplugs; custom-made and conventional ready-to-wear types.
Custom-made swimming earplugs
Ready-to-wear swimming earplugsProlonged exposure to loud noise without proper hearing protection can cause permanent damage to hearing. Noise reduction earplugs can decrease the level of noise entering your ears to protect it from harmful sounds. These earplugs are perfect for people who work in noisy environments (i.e. clubs, construction sites, exposed to heavy machinery). It is never too late to start protecting your ears!
Noise Reduction Ear Plugs
Sleeping earplugs are designed to promote comfortable and uninterrupted sleep. It effectively decrease external noise from entering the ears and is custom-made according to the contours of the ears, allowing maximum comfort. It is perfect for shift workers and those who want to improve overall sleeping quality.
When exposed to loud music for an extended period of time, the inner ear hair cells will be permanently damaged, causing hearing problems or even hearing loss. Therefore, music performers or music lovers should wear musician earplugs when performing or enjoying music or concerts. Since conventional earplugs decrease most high frequencies and some low frequencies, music will sound distorted. Also, they feel obstructive and most musicians or music lovers refuse to wear them. Musician earplugs contain a filter that can reduce the overall intensity of music at all frequencies and not distort it, hence, preserving the original quality of the music. Moreover, it is custom-made to the contours of the user's ears and is made of a soft silicon material, improving both sound quality and comfort for the user.
Musician earplugs are available with various filters: ER-9, ER-15 and ER-25, reducing 9 dB, 15 dB and 25 dB respectively, to accommodate to different music and different musician's needs.
By using custom-made earphone plugs, you greatly improve comfort levels when listening to music. These earphone plugs are tailored to the exact contours of your ears. The perfect acoustic seal can give you a better sound isolation and bass response. As ambient noise is greatly reduced, music volumes can be set at lower levels to protect hearing. Most of the "In-the-ear" earphones can be used with custom-made earphone plugs, including Shure, Ultimate Ears, Bose, Bang & Olufsen, Westone… etc.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound within the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound. It can be subjective or objective; continuous or intermittent; loud or weak and the sounds vary; some patients report hearing sounds like a bell, ringing, crickets, white noise, blood pumping or whistle etc. Tinnitus may cause distress but is not life-threatening and many patients may return to normal lives after therapy
Other than seeing an Ear Nose and Throat specialist, tinnitus patients should also contact an Audiologist for hearing test and tinnitus matching tests. Tinnitus assessments usually include a pure tone audiogram, impedance audiometry, tinnitus evaluation(i.e. most prominent pitch, tinnitus loudness match, minimum masking level) and a tinnitus handicap inventory.
When you see an Audiologist, the procedure is usually as follows:
Tinnitus is not a diagnosis, rather a symptom. The concept behind tinnitus treatment is to improve the symptom rather than to cure it like a disease. Therefore the method used to treat tinnitus is a multidisciplinary approach to improve the annoyance of this symptom rather than to eliminate the sound.
Determining the Origin
After taking a detailed case history and understanding the symptoms, the Ear Nose and Throat specialist will perform examinations of the ear, eardrum, nose, nasopharynx and pharynx in hope to determine the cause of tinnitus. The patient will also need to have hearing tests performed by an Audiologist to determine if the hearing is normal because hearing loss may also cause tinnitus. Since there are many problems that may cause tinnitus, specialists have to determine the origin of cause in order to eliminate all external problems first. A portion of tinnitus patients experience relief from tinnitus after the core problem has been solved. For example, if tinnitus was caused by ear infections, the cure of course would be anti-inflammatory medication; if tinnitus was caused by otosclerosis, insertion of a new prosthesis as a replacement of the stapes would be considered; if tinnitus was caused by perforation of the eardrum, surgical measures may be taken to repair the eardrum. Moreover, patients with degeneration in the inner ear may be suggested to take medication to improve vascular activity and if the patient is diagnosed with hearing loss, he/she may consider wearing hearing aids so with the help of external environmental sounds, the tinnitus may be masked.
During therapy, try to avoid the following activities:
